Ballindean Ryelands

About us

Welcome to the official website of the Ballindean Ryeland Flock!

We are a small flock of ryelands based on the east coast of Scotland established in 2019 with just 3 ewes with lambs at foot. Within the first year we expanded with the purchase of another 6 gimmers and lambed for the first time in 2020. Some of the ewe lambs produced in that first year were retained to expand our breeding flock further and we now stand at 17 breeding ewes.

Our flock grazes several rented paddocks close to home and without those it would not be possible to maintain our flock. We are extremely grateful for the continuing support we receive from landlords, farming friends and fellow ryeland keepers who are an invaluable source of advice.

All of lambing takes place indoors around mid-February to mid-March and after only a short spell inside, lambs and ewes are turned out to grass. Apart from a short period prior to lambing where the ewes are given supplementary hard feed, our flock is almost entirely grass-fed.

In the near future, we will have breeding stock for sale and lamb boxes will be available (please enquire for further details).
